Not being a performing musician, I can only imagine how it feels to be out on tour for weeks at a time. The exiliration of being on stage playin’ and singin’ to your fans, contrasted against having to be gone from home and the one’s you love for long stretches of time.

The fact is, this very thing, this bein’ away from home livin’ on a bus thing was one of the primary reasons I didn’t “do something” with my music, as was so often suggested to a teenage me by people I respected (well that, and the fact that I knew my limits as a vocalist and guitar player). Here’s where it gets fun though-

As a songwriter, I can write about true-to-life things. I can write about completely fictional made-up things, or things that are somewhere in between these two parameters, and the latter is exactly what I have done with my latest song THE BEAT OF YOUR HEART.

While I don’t know what it’s like to live on the road as I perform to full stadiums, I do know that I have a wife and family that I love a whole lot, and I don’t like bein’ away from them for very long. As a writer, I know this- why not take a melody that I woke up with one morning a couple months ago, and start playin’ with it. Start fashioning lyrics to it and see where it leads. In this case, it lead to a story about a well grounded, thankful artist who is simply lookin’ forward to gettin’ home to the one he loves.

Now all I have to do is find a traveling musician who’s lookin’ for their next hit. Maybe the people in that stadium will appreciate the new closing song of the concert they’ve just enjoyed, as the singer grabs his guitar and a stool, the lights get turned down, and he shares from his heart how grateful he is for them, but also how he is excited to be returning to the heart that waits for him at home. Maybe, just maybe…
